Hair vs Swab?
You cannot put the swabs in a baggy and keep them in the refrigerator. The saliva contains bacteria and molds which, if allowed to grow in moisture, will destroy the cells in the specimen and the DNA. To prevent this, the specimen must be allowed to dry properly and stored in a low- humidity environment.
Extreme changes in temperature might affect the specimen and therefore a temperature stable storage environment is desirable.
If the specimen is not needed for a number of years, it must be stored in a place that is secure, fireproof and always accessible.
No matter which method you use, we recommend keeping DNA samples of your children and, for that matter, all members of your family!
